CIA Coldservice Wins Contractor of the Year
CIA Awards

Ringwood-based contractor Cold Service won the praise of judges for its comprehensive presentation showing all-round attention to detail in meeting the requirements of its clients, particularly the more demanding ones in retail.

One of the most notable areas was its response to the calls from clients for contractors to improve standards in reducing leaks. Cold Service has worked closely with major client Morrisons on a policy to introduce improved and quality-assured brazing. It researched best methods of improving oxidation and the resulting programme has won the approval of a clutch of end-users and they are prepared to share the results with the rest of the industry.

Other initiatives include collaboration with Morrisons on energy-saving measures such as liquid pump amplification, and a host of intensive R22 conversions with retailers, which have now topped the 50 mark.

The firm has calculated its own carbon footprint and says that reporting its footprint per employee or per £ turnover will enable it to grow the business whilst still becoming more carbon efficient.

The judges thought these approaches typified the company’s keenness to get things right for their customers. “An outstanding achievement, particularly the work on brazing”

CIA Environmental Collaboration of the Year Sponsored by Coldservice

Environmental Collaboration of the Year Sponsored by Coldservice - Won By Morrisons & WR Refrigeration

The collaboration category was introduced last year to recognise the need for companies to work together to achieve increasingly stiff environmental targets. The category’s sustained high number of entries this year show that the industry is embracing that spirit, and judges found it a tough task to separate out some strong imaginative entries. In the end they awarded the top prize to a partnership between contractor and retailer in a growing area – carbon dioxide refrigeration.

The contractor and its retail customer have worked closely on the creation of a course in carbon dioxide refrigeration to meet urgent demand for Morrisons’ CO2 installation programme. Based at WR’s Sutton Coldfield National Academy, the two-day course covering practice and theory is now required for all engineers to work with CO2 on Morrisons’ sites.

Judges were admiring of the work, saying it was “an excellent and vitally needed training initiative, showing good collaboration between a retailer and their contractor”, and particularly noted WR’s willingness to open up their centre to rival contractors working on Morrisons’ projects.

Cold Service is committed to reducing its carbon footprint
Carbon footprint

In order to gain a greater understanding of the environmental impact of our operations, Cold Service Limited undertook a carbon footprint calculation exercise early in 2010, in conjunction with SKM Enviros.

A carbon footprint is a measure of the greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted to the atmosphere as a result of our operations. The GHG emitted in the greatest volume globally is Carbon Dioxide (CO2). All GHGs are calculated relative to the equivalent amount of CO2, and expressed in a single number (usually in tonnes per year), hence the name carbon footprint.

Having calculated our absolute carbon footprint, our next step is to determine an appropriate measure to set it against in order to measure progress. Reporting our footprint per £ turnover or per full time employee will allow us to grow our business whilst becoming more carbon efficient.

We have already started to reduce our footprint through a number of activities.
